Who is Dr. John Chitty?

Qualifying from Royal Veterinary College in 1990, John has specialised in exotic species for many years (see exotics pages). When not working he enjoys all sports especially cricket – though watching not playing these days!- as well as real ale!

Qualifications and Employment:
-Qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 1990
-Gained Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Certificate in Zoological Medicine 2000
-Started in mixed practice in Andover in 1990: has gradually evolved from mainly farm work to almost entirely working with exotic species. Was consultant for the Marwell Zoological Park for nearly a decade
-Currently works with six zoological collections
-Secretary of State Zoo Inspector

-President, Veterinary Invertebrate Society, 2000- date
-President, Southern Counties Veterinary Society (SCVS), 2002-2004 (Secretary 2005-date)
-Member of Board of Directors of the Association of Avian Veterinarians 2009-2011
-UK representative to the Board of the Association of Avian Veterinarians
-Secretary to the European Committee of the Association of Avian Veterinarians
-Veterinary Advisor to the Terrestrial Invertebrate Working Group (British Association of Zoos and aquaria) and to the European Ratite TAG
-Past Chairman of the Steering Committee of the British Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (BWRC) 2006-2009
-Consultant Veterinary Surgeon (and Vice-President of) The Great Bustard Group working on the reintroduction of the Great Bustard to the UK

-Co-Editor of the 2nd Edition of the “Manual of Psittacine Birds” (BSAVA; 2005)
-Senior Co-Editor of the “Manual of Raptors, Pigeons and Passerines” ( BSAVA; 2008).
Currently working on a textbook of tortoise medicine and surgery and editing a new Manual of Rabbit Surgery, Imaging and Dentistry!
